Since last time...
Got up early to catch a flight to Arequipa. First time at a high altitude area at 2335 feet. Visited the Monasteraio de Santa Catalina where it was a monastery for all the nuns in the past and it was kind of a community of their own with a market place and streets within. Its interesting to learn the life of a nun in the past. The second daughter of every family are sent to the convent (the first is given for marriage and the third stays at home to take care of the parents). Most of their lives are spent inside praying and only 4 hours everyday outside for the second daughters that just arrive at the covenant. It is interesting to see how the nuns were disconnected but all connected to the outside walls of the monastery through the other people that come in and out/work through. It is just such a pleasant and serene with all the colors and architecture inside.
Visited the main square of Arequipa. It is really the center place where people walk through, relax and meet each other there.
After lunch we went to different views points to see the 3 main volcanoes of Arequipa. They are active but dormant. The weather was not too conducive to take pictures of the volcanoes.
We then went to the museum where they visited the ice maiden, Juanita. I was somewhat really fascinated by all of it. I actually managed to sit through all the video segment and paid attention to the tour of the exhibit. I was oddly intrigued by the matter.
oh, I forgot to mention...this hotel room that i'm staying in is slightly creepy. My parents claim that theirs is worse but at least it has a traditional/artistic feel to it. My room is just creepy.
Anyways, less words and more pictures. Hopefully, my photography skills isn't that bad.1. School children outside the Monastery. This weekend is the 160th anniversary of the Spanish coming to Peru.
2. A courtyard at the Monastery.
3. Peruvian lady near the main square.
4. Atop the monastery.
5. Ice cream man at the square
6. Misty volcano from a viewpoint. The weather wasn't very good to take a good picture of it.
7. My parent's hotel room.
8. My creepy hotel room. Clearly not as cool as my parents'.
Thats all for today!
